Styrene Attributes
Styrene plastic is remarkably strong given its relatively low weight to size ratio. Styrene is relatively inexpensive, sturdy, and easy to transport. It’s ideal for both indoor and outdoor projects and applications. Styrene is highly impact resistant and shatterproof which makes it a popular alternative to glass in the framing industry. On the topic of framing in particular, styrene is often considered a less expensive alternative to acrylic plastic. Keep in mind, however, that compared to acrylic, styrene will not block out nearly as many UV rays (so keep this in mind if you’re wanting to frame a prized photograph or document). Styrene plastic is an appropriate glass alternative in settings where safety is key such as children’s bedrooms, hospitals, schools, and stores.
Styrene Description
Styrene is a unique thermoplastic used most commonly in displays, signage, and other commercial advertising applications. It is strong, stable, and highly resistant to impacts making it a favorite for displays in high traffic areas such as grocery stores and shopping malls. Compared to other more rigid plastics, styrene fabrication and styrene machining is a relatively simple process for styrene fabricators. It can be easily cut, drilled, pressed, or bent into shape making it a favorite for even crafters and DIY-ers. It can also be painted and/or glued with regular products you’ll find at any home improvement, hobby, or craft store. Because of its versatility and relatively low cost, it is also a favorite medium for scale model hobbyists.
Regarding styrene distribution and sales, styrene is typically sold in sheets or by the linear foot. Styrene plastic is available in a number of different colors and thicknesses. Machined edges, rounded edges, radius corners, and other add-ons are available as well for an additional cost. For more about styrene fabrication, contact the team at JC Finley.
