ABS Attributes
ABS is a relatively low-cost thermoplastic with superb strength and rigidity relative to its size (if you’ve ever stepped barefoot on a rogue LEGO brick, you can surely attest to this). ABS is resistant to most abrasive chemicals and resilient to staining, which make it a favorite for kitchen appliances and other items that require regular cleaning. ABS is highly impact resistant and performs well in high and low temperatures without too much expansion, reduction, or risk of breaking. It possesses great electrical insulation properties, which is why most of the plastic aspects you’ll see on electrical components (outlets, for instance) are ABS plastic. And because it is easy to paint, glue, sand, and shape, ABS materials are popular among artists, crafters, and DIY-ers.
ABS Description
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (or ABS) is a thermoplastic and amorphous polymer which means it can be melted time and time again without degradation. These plastics, including ABS, are ideal for molding and recycling processes.
ABS gets its unique characteristics from a combination of the three monomers of which it is comprised: acrylonitrile for chemical resistance and heat stability, butadiene for toughness, and styrene for rigidity. When combined with butadiene and styrene, acrylonitrile develops a polar attraction which further contributes to the durability of the finished product.
In addition to being a perfect polymer for injection and blow molding applications, ABS products can be easily sanded, shaped, glued, and painted. ABS fabrication offers endless possibilities as the material is extremely versatile and one of the more common plastics used in indoor household products that are not only sturdy and reliable, but aesthetically pleasing as well. ABS is not ideal for outdoor products and projects as it is more vulnerable to sun and weather damage than other plastics designed specifically for these applications.
In the realm of ABS distribution, ABS is generally sold in blocks, sheets, or panels and comes in a wide variety of colors and thicknesses. Compared to other thermoplastics, ABS fabrication and ABS machining is relatively simple for ABS fabricators of every skill level.
ABS is a reliable and cost-effective option for a wide variety of applications including computer keys, automotive components, household appliances, and even LEGO building bricks. For more on ABS fabrication, contact the JC Finley team.
