Acrylic Attributes

JC Finley manufactures acrylic plastic that is known for its strength, stability, clarity, and heat-resistant qualities. For experienced acrylic fabricators, acrylic fabrication is not a highly in-depth process as the plastic is easy to form and adheres with or bonds to other materials quite easily. It is stronger and lighter than glass and just as transparent which makes it the perfect material for various types of shelves, displays, signs, and skylights. And because of its inherent resiliency, it can be used both inside and outside without too much concern for weathering.

Acrylic Description

Acrylic plastic is a common material with a variety of everyday uses. With its crystal clear transparency, acrylic plastic is often used as a lighter, sturdier, and more resilient and shatter-proof alternative to glass. The clear boards around a hockey arena, for example, are made of large sheets of acrylic plastic and are strong enough to sustain vicious and violent hits from the players. Acrylic glass was first developed in 1928 and marketed in 1933. During World War II, acrylic plastic was used in a variety of military applications including submarine periscopes, aircraft windshields, and gun turrets. Upon the conclusion of the war, companies specializing in acrylic distribution began popping up and the product became a popular material for household products and other civilian needs.

Acrylic plastic is often sold in sheets with varying thicknesses and colors but it is also available in tubes or rods. Of course, with acrylic fabrication or acrylic machining technology, JC Finley can fashion just about anything out of the material.

You might be most familiar with one brand in particular: Plexiglas. The term “Plexiglas” is actually a registered trademark and, despite common vernacular, only applies to that particular product and not acrylic plastic sheets as a whole. For general acrylic fabrication products, the terms “acrylic glass” or “lucite” would be more appropriate alternatives (or even “polymethyl methacrylate” if you’re feeling particularly scientific).
